Student Welfare Services

THE GUIDANCE SYSTEM

The students of the college are divided into small groups and each group is under the charge of a lecturer, known as the guidance tutor. He supervises and guides the students for helping them to attain their goals and ambitions in life. To achieve this end, Placement Cell has been set up in the college. The Centre aims at integration of the task of character building, career guidance and development of all round personality as a composite project. The center has an ’Information and Reading room’ in addition to guidance and counseling facilities. Preliminary and advanced guidance camps are organised for College Students of all classes. Special training courses are also run by the centre on ’no-profit no-loss’ basis for preparing the students for P.M.T./C.E.T., I.A.S. and Allied Services, I.M.A./N.D.A. competitions etc. An Institute of Computer Sciences has been set up which runs one year Diploma courses in computer applications.

THE SUBJECT SOCIETIES

Subject societies are organised in all the departments to promote interest in the particular subject. Periodic meetings and contests are held and prizes are awarded. Societies of Sciences subjects arrange academic excursions and tours. During these tours they collect material and information that help students in the study of their respective subject.

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

This scheme aims at creating in the students a sense of participation in nation building through programmes such as eradication of illiteracy, slum clearance, road building, voluntary health service, agricultural development, family planning, National Integration Campaign and Career Guidance for students and to inculcate a spirit of equality and fraternity in all section of society. The college has three units of N.S.S. for boys and one for girls. Students are encouraged to join N.S.S. in large numbers.

NATIONAL CADET CORPS

The college lays great emphasis on N.C.C. Training, as it makes the youth disciplined and patriotic, broadens their outlook and inculcates in them qualities of self-reliance, leadership and determination. The students are advised to join N.C.C. in large numbers. The college has an authorised strength of four companies of N.C.C.

(a)   Battery : One company of 125 cadets . Science students are preferred for it ;

(b)   Infantry : One company of 100 cadets .

(c)   Air Wing : One company .

(d)   Naval Wing : One unit of 50 cadets.

Special training and guidance is provided by the Defence Studies Department to help the students in getting Commission in various branches of Armed Forces.

Rules regarding N.C.C. are as follows :

1. The cadets have to present themselves for training and parades at fixed place and time.

2. All cadets are expected to attend camps for which they are detailed. Heavy fine is imposed for absence from the camp without prior permission of the Principal.

3. All cadets have to pay Rs. 1/- towards their unit private fund to be operated by the Principal.

4. All N.C.C. cadets shall be issued uniform which they are expected to use with care during the training periods.

  CULTURAL  ACTIVITIES/YOUTH WELFARE CLUB

To provide for a constructive channel for the expression of various faculties amongst our students, to facilitate their all round moral, mental and physical development and to make their leisure constructively recreational, adventurous and socially useful, great emphasis is laid on youth and cultural activities. The College Youth Welfare Club, with the active help and assistance of the Department of Youth Services of Punjab Govt. and the G.N.D.U. Youth Welfare Department, organises Youth Leadership and adventure camps, guidance tours and discussion groups, inter/state tours, hiking and trekking exercises, cycling excursions, social work campaigns and other such activities.

The College Cultural literary competitions, provide healthy channel to the students for the proper and systematized expression of their creative urges. Arrangements have been made for the establishment of various hobby clubs during the session.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Department provides facilities for preparing students for various University, State and National level competitions in various games and sports. The department has to its credit a voluminous contribution in creating sportsmen and athletes of Olympic, International and National standards. The Department also provides facilities for teaching of Physical Education upto B.A. level.

GUIDELINES REGARDING THE FACILITY FOR THE STUDENTS BELONGING TO BACKWARD CLASSES/SCHEDULES CASTES

The details of the financial assistance given to the students belonging to scheduled castes, backward classes and schedule tribes to complete their College/University Education is as follows :

1. Post Matric Scheme of the Govt. of India : Students belonging to scheduled castes who are permanent residents of Punjab State and are getting education at the Matric/Secondary level in any part of India will be sanctioned stipends under this scheme. provided the family income from all sources is less than Rs. 65290/- per annum.

2. State Post Matric Scholarship Scheme : The students belonging to scheduled castes who are permanent residents of Punjab State and who study in the recognised evening classes in Punjab Govt. Controlled Corporations/Institutions, Local Bodies/Universities will be sanctioned stipends under this scheme provided the annual income of the student (including family) doesn’t exceed Rs. 9000/-.

3. State Harijan Welfare Scheme : The stipends are sanctioned under this scheme to the students belonging to backward classes who are permanent residents of Punjab State and are studying in the College/Institutions of Punjab, provided the family annual income from all sources is less than Rs. 24,000/-

4. Stipends for lower classes :

Stipend will be sanctioned to the students belonging to lower classes who are permanent residenst of Punjab State and are studying in the College of Punjab, provided the annual income of the family doesn’t exceed Rs. 5000/- and the land revenue should not exceed Rs. 1000/- annually.

5. Special Grants for the Girls from Scheduled Castes : Girls belonging to scheduled castes, whose parents are permanent residents of Punjab State and who are studying in the Colleges of Punjab will be sanctioned a grant provided the annual family income doesn’t exceed Rs. 9000/-
