Khalsa College Amritsar organized a Workshop on ' Spoken English'

The Postgraduate Department of English, Khalsa College, Amritsar organized a Workshop on "Spoken English". It was conducted by Prof. Sunita Dhillon, a renowned literary personality and an expert in Phonetics and linguistics.

            Prof. Sunita Dhillon was accorded a warm welcome by Principal Dr. Daljit Singh. In his address, he said that learning a foreign language is always an advantage. He shared with the students that English as an International language, will always have its due importance. "Fluency in this language is necessary if one has to move on in the global world. Khalsa College will always try to equip students to compete at all levels" he said.

            The Workshop, divided into two sections, comprised of an initial understanding of simple rules required to acquire the skill of speaking correct English. Emphasizing on the importance of spoken English, Prof. Dhillon stated that most of our daily activities are in spoken form. Since, we deal with people in all areas, correct spoken language is an added advantage. During the first session, she discussed the importance of Tone, Stress, Accent and Pitch in English Language. Since it is on these devices that the entire communication depends. "English Language is the Stress Timed Language since Stress and Accent is fixed", she analyzed. Prof. Dhillon conveyed to the students that it is the basic hinderance on the part of the speaker that makes the language difficult. But once  rules are master, the results are perfect.

            In the second session of the workshop,  Prof. Dhillon interacted with the students by making them do several practical drills and activities related to pronunciation. She also explained the rules of uttering compound words.

            Prof. Ms. Navneen Bawa, Head, Department of English thanked the Chief Guest for sharing her experience with the students and faculty members.
